Marine Algae Extract Promise Future Health Benefits Ingredients: An Untapped Resource for Biomedical Application

There is currently an enormous surge of interest in the use of marine algae for biomedical application. The current research was conducted to evaluate the biomedical application of marine algae Gracilaria changii. Screening of the G. changii extract for antimicrobial activity showed that the extracts possesses significant antimicrobial activity. The MIC and MLC values for the G. changii extract were found in the range of 3.125-12.500 mg/ml and 6.25-25.00 mg/ml, respectively. The G. changii extract were found to inhibit the early growth phase of the yeast (C. albicans) and bacteria (P. aeruginosa and B. subtilis). Microscopic studies showed that the G. changii extract caused some physiological and morphological changes in the treated cells of C. albicans, P. aeruginosa and B. subtilis. The G. changii extract possessed antioxidant activity with IC50 values 5.77 mg/ml and TLC analysis showed the band with Rf 0.63 as antioxidant band from the seven major band. The G. changii extract screened for toxicity against the brine shrimp had LC50 value more than 1.0 mg/ml; screened for cytotoxicity against HepG2 cancer cells had the IC50 value more than 30.0 μg/ml; and screened for acute toxicity in mice had lethality dose of LD50e more than 2000 mg/ml which confirmed that the extract was not toxic. The separation procedures had successfully isolated an antiyeast active fraction, which was identified as Fraction 3 with significant antiyeast activity compared to the G. changii extract. The stability study of the extract in artificial gastric and intestine juice demonstrated that the extract was stable. Moreover, the extract able to reduce the number of C. albicans in systemic candidiasis. The C. albicans infected wound healing study revealed positive effect on the skin wound restoration with a significant reduction of yeast count and also helps the regeneration of skin.
