GWAS for Identification of QTLs Contributing for Accumulation of Micronutrient in Common Bean

Iron (Fe) and Zinc (Zn) deficiencies are of major concern in human health and plant metabolism. More than 50% of populations mainly from developing countries are suffering from one another micronutrient malnutrition. Ensuring adequate supply of these micronutrients through diet consisting of staple foods, like common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is must. Specific interventions in plant breeding like identification of QTLs/ genes controlling these traits are needed to mitigate these problems. In the present study an effort was made to evaluate common bean genotypes collected from Jammu and Kashmir for Fe, Zn & protein contents and to identify the markers associated with them. A significant variation was observed in Fe, Zn and proteins contents among these genotypes. Genotype R2 possesses 7.22 mg 100g-1 of Fe, genotype K15 with 1.93 mg 100g-1 of Zn and genotype KS6 with 31.6% of protein content. These genotypes can further be utilized in breeding programmes for development of nutritionally improved varieties of common bean. Further, association mapping analysis using GLM approach was done to identify SSRs associated with accumulation of Fe, Zn and protein. We have identifying 13 SSRs significantly (p<0.05) associated with Fe, Zn and protein in common bean. These findings will provide potential opportunity in molecular breeding of common bean for improvement of Fe, Zn and protein.
