The fabrication of novel nanochannels and their applications

Kai Xiao is a MD-PhD-student (2012-2017) in physical chemistry. Xiao Kai is currently a PhD candidate at the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICCAS). He received his BS degree (2012) from Jilin University. In 2012, he joined Prof. Lei Jiang’s group. His current scientific interests are focused on the design and fabrication of novel biomimetic smart nanochannels/nanopores and their applications. To date, he has authored in excess of 20 PubMed-indexed publications, most of them mainly in prestigious international journals such as Adv. Mater., J. Am. Chem. Soc., and ACS Nano.

Biological ion channels, which can regulate ionic transport properties through cell membranes mainly embodied in ionic rectification, are very important for the implementation of various significant physiological functions in life processes. Inspired by these ion channels, the generation of solid-state nanochannels has strong implications to simulate the new regime of rectification mechanism under nanoscale confinement to enhance the functionality of biological ion channels. To realize superior ion transportation properties, we fabricated novel solid-state nanochannels, including funnel-shaped nanochannel and dumbbell-shaped nanochannel. The funnel-shaped nanochannels with a much longer critical region has an enhanced stability and controllability of ionic diode properties. Meanwhile, the dumbbell-shaped nanochannel system has a similar structure of potassium ion channel KcsA, which can realise the ion transportation properties from selectivity to rectification. These nanochannels can be used in water desalination, controllable valves and drug delivery systems.
