Effect of Indoleacetic Acid, Salicylic Acid on Photosynthetic Pigments and Growth Parameters of Okra Plant under Salinity Stress

Salinity stress is a global phenomenon that affects agricultural yield throughout the world whether it is for subsistence or economic gain. Many crops have adaptive features to tolerate salinity stress at germination, but sensitive to salt during emergence and vegetative development through generation of reactive oxygen species. To ameliorative effect of reactive oxygen species damage on Abelmoshcus esculentus by salinity stress, seeds were soaking in IAA (indole acetic acid) or SA (salicylic acid) solutions, and control seeds in distilled water for 24 hours in the dark at 25°C and planting on saline soil. The results showed that photosynthetic pigments and growth parameters of salinity stressed okra were negatively affected especially under high salinity levels (150 and 200 mM NaCl). But treatments of salinity stressed okra with indole acetic acid and salicylic acid mitigated the harmful effect of salinity. The best dose of IAA and SA were established between 0.4 mM and 0.5 mM IAA and 10-2mM and 10-4mM SA, with better salinity tolerance at 0.4 mM and 10-4mM concentrations of IAA and SA respectively. IAA or SA improved salt tolerance in salinity stressed okra plant by reducing the effect of reactive oxygen species and thus significantly increased the levels of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids, and could be adopted as growth regulators or antioxidants in order to improve plant growth under different salinity levels for agricultural yield.
