Conventional Propagation Method for Tomato to Overcome Biotic and Abiotic Stress

Grafting has emerged as a promising and an alternative tool to the relatively slow conventional breeding methods aimed at increasing tolerance to abiotic stresses and soil pathogens in fruit vegetables. There are several methods of tomato grafting, but cleft grafting and side grafting are the most commonly practiced in India due to easiness in grafting & high graft success rate. For grafting tomato (scion) on egg plant, seeds are sown in small plastic glasses (size 7×9 cm2) or potting plugs filled with soil, sand, vermicompost and cocopit (2:1:1:1). After one week, the scion cultivars of tomato are sown in protected nursery or in potting plugs. Four to five weeks old seedlings of egg plant are used as rootstocks, whereas 25-30 days old tomato seedlings as scions. Grafting should be perform before rootstock and scion become woody & before secondary growth is notice. Often this stage coincides with having two to four leaves stage. The rootstock of species Solanum lycoersicum, S. pimpinellifolium, S. habrochaites, S. melongena, S. torvum, inter-specific hybrid (S. lycopersicum × S. habrochaites) for the resistance of biotic stresses like Tolerance to bacterial wilt, fusarium wilt, root knot nematode, verticillium wilt and to abiotic stresses like corky root, flooding, drought and also extends fruiting period. Field studies shows that grafting holds promise for decreasing the impact of these diseases as well as increasing the overall productivity of tomato cultivars.
